Lawsonia intracellularis is an obligate intracellular, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. It is the causative agent of proliferative enteropathy in pigs, a common diarrheal disease affecting both grower and weaned pigs.

Proliferative enteropathy caused by L. intracellularis is characterized by mucosal epithelial cell hyperplasia and inflammation of the small intestine, colon, and cecum. The disease can present in a mild, self-limiting form, but in some cases, it may lead to prolonged diarrhea, severe necrotizing enteritis, or hemorrhagic enteritis with a high mortality rate.

TopSPEC® Lawsonia intracellularis qPCR Kit is a testing kit designed to detect the presence of Lawsonia intracellularis – gene aspA associated with necrotizing enteritis in pigs, detected using the qPCR technique. Early pathogen detection helps prevent severe consequences caused by bacterial infection. The kit utilizes a master mix containing UNG (Uracil-N-Glycosylase), which helps prevent cross-contamination from previous PCR products.
