About TopSPEC® PDD multiplex qPCR Kit
Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae is a marine bacterium belonging to the family Vibrionaceae. It is Gram-negative, rod-shaped, and motile. Colonies of PDD appear opaque white on BHI agar and green on TCBS medium. Together with Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida , PDD represents one of the two principal subspecies of Photobacterium damselae.PDD is recognized as a highly virulent pathogen, causing septicemia in numerous marine fish species, often associated with high mortality rates and significant economic losses in aquaculture.
In addition to fish, PDD has been reported to cause severe disease in shrimp, with extremely high mortality rates documented in countries such as China, Thailand, India, and Japan. Infected shrimp typically exhibit anorexia, abnormal swimming behavior, lethargy, hepatopancreatic atrophy, pale intestines, soft body texture, and notably, a distinct discoloration of the body ranging from pallor to a milky-white appearance.
Historically, PDD had not been detected or reported in shrimp in Vietnam. Previous studies and reports only documented PDD infections in marine fish species (e.g., cobia, grouper) across the northern, central, and southern regions. However, recent findings have confirmed the presence of PDD in whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) through 16S rRNA gene sequencing and comparison with published PDD sequences available in genetic databases.
TopSPEC ® PDD multiplex qPCR Kit is a diagnostic assay specifically developed to detect the presence of the haemolysin A and damselysin toxin genes, as well as the urease enzyme gene, in P. damselae ssp. Damselae (PDD), a pathogen responsible for shrimp diseases, using Real-time PCR technology.
