About TopSENSI ® NG & CHT qPCR Kit

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CHT) are gram-negative bacteria that cause sexually transmitted infections in humans. NG are diplococci, oval-shaped bacteria that cause gonorrhea, which only develop and multiply within the human body and do not exist outside the environment. CHT are intracellular bacteria causing non-gonococcal infections. CHT exists in two different forms: elementary body (EB), during which the bacteria live as intracellular parasites and proliferate. Upon completion, they transform into the reticulate body (RB), where they release cytotoxins, destroy cells, and are liberated externally. The main route of transmission for NG and CHT is unsafe sexual practices. The bacteria cause disease by attaching and infiltrating genital, anal, rectal, and pharyngeal epithelial cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the estimated number of new NG and CHT infections among adults aged 15-49 worldwide were 82 million and 128 million cases in 2020, respectively.

NG and CHT infections are often asymptomatic, making accurate diagnosis and treatment challenging. Prolonged untreated infections can lead to complications such as infertility, urethritis in men, or cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women. Particularly in women, NG and CHT infections during pregnancy increase the risk of ectopic pregnancies, premature rupture of membranes, preterm birth, and arthritis. More critically, NG and CHT in the maternal body can be transmitted to the newborn, being a primary cause of bacterial conjunctivitis leading to blindness in infants. Furthermore, CHT infections can cause neonatal pneumonia. Hence, screening for NG and CHT in women and newborns before and after birth is crucial.

TopSENSI ® NG & CHT qPCR Kit is used to detect the presence of NG and CHT DNA in various human samples using real-time PCR technology. The test results of this kit are for clinical reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis or exclusion.
