Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative bacillus of the genus Vibrio, has a curved rod shape and is motile. Bacteria V. vulnificus is often present in salt water, brackish water, estuaries and causes disease in fishermen living in coastal areas. V. vulnificus often causes symptoms of gastroenteritis, sepsis and wound infections with high mortality rates. People with underlying diseases such as diabetes and immunodeficiency are very susceptible to this type of bacteria.
