About TopSENSI ® Treponema pallidum qPCR Kit
Treponema pallidum (TP) is a gram-negative bacterium belonging to the Treponemataceae family, and is the primary cause of syphilis and yaws in humans. TP typically appears as a spiral-shaped rod with a diameter of approximately 0.2 μm and only grows and multiplies under microaerophilic conditions. To date, TP has not been cultured in vitro. The structure of TP includes two membranes: an inner membrane and an outer membrane, with a peptidoglycan layer sandwiched between them. Most of TP's surface antigens are oriented inward and are not expressed externally, making it undetectable through surface antigen tests.
Syphilis is primarily transmitted through unsafe sexual contact or from mother to child. The disease progresses through three main stages. In the initial stage, infection may present without any symptoms, but by day 21, painless round sores appear on the genitalia. In the secondary stage, symptoms include rashes on the palms and soles and genital lesions. If untreated, the disease enters a latent stage, during which no symptoms are observed. However, in this latent stage, the disease is difficult to detect and may lead to neurological and cardiovascular diseases caused by TP. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, there were approximately 7.1 million new cases of syphilis globally in 2020.
Syphilis infection in pregnant women can be transmitted to the newborn, leading to complications such as arthritis, blindness, deafness, and neonatal meningitis. According to WHO estimates in 2016, approximately 7 out of every 1000 pregnant women were infected with syphilis. Among these cases, around 143,000 early fetal deaths and stillbirths, 61,000 neonatal deaths, 41,000 preterm births, and 109,000 infants with congenital syphilis were reported. Therefore, early screening for syphilis before childbirth is essential.
The TopSENSI® Treponema pallidum qPCR Kit is used to detect the presence of Treponema pallidum DNA in various human samples using real-time PCR technology. The test results from this kit are intended for clinical reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis or exclusion.
