Introduction to TopSENSI® Toxoplasma gondii qPCR Kit

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular parasite capable of infecting various animal species, including humans. It is estimated that about one-third of the global population has been exposed to T. gondii at least once.

Typically, this parasite does not pose a health risk to humans. However, for individuals with weakened immune systems and pregnant women, T. gondii can cause severe complications, affecting the nervous system, muscles, eyes, and heart. It may lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or congenital conditions such as hydrocephalus and epilepsy in newborns.

When a mother is infected with T. gondii, the risk of transmission to the fetus is high—around 30%, even if the mother shows no symptoms. The transmission rate varies by pregnancy stage: 15% in the first trimester, 30% in the second trimester, and 60% in the third trimester. The severity of the infection for the fetus depends on the timing of maternal exposure, with the greatest risk occurring in the first trimester.
