TopSENSI ® GBS qPCR Kit

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a common Gram-positive bacterium found in the reproductive or gastrointestinal tracts of women (20-40%). It appears as diplococci or in chains. Based on surface carbohydrate and polysaccharide antigens, GBS is classified into serotypes, including Ia, Ib, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, and IX. Beta-hemolysin, a type of polysaccharide toxin secreted by GBS, destroys the host red blood cell membranes, leading to hemolysis.

In most cases, GBS infections are asymptomatic or non-threatening. However, when infections worsen, they may lead to conditions such as vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, or endometritis. Particularly in pregnant women, GBS infections are a major risk for neonatal infections (either pre- or post-delivery), which can result in sepsis and meningitis. The primary route of early-onset neonatal GBS infection is transmission from mother to child during childbirth as the baby passes through the birth canal. Additionally, GBS bacteria can enter the amniotic fluid through the bloodstream, potentially causing premature rupture of membranes and stillbirth.

According to studies from ACOG in 2020, 10–30% of pregnant women carry GBS in the vaginal and rectal areas. Approximately 50% of these cases involve the transmission of GBS from mother to child, with 1–2% of infants who are colonized by the bacteria potentially developing early-onset neonatal infections if not treated promptly.

The TopSENSI® GBS qPCR Kit is used for the detection of Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus - GBS) DNA in samples extracted from various patient specimens using real-time PCR technology. The results of this diagnostic kit are for clinical reference purposes only and should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis or exclusion of the infection.
