PDCoV is an RNA virus with a genome of approximately 25.4 - 31.7 kb encoding four different structural proteins, including spike (S), envelope (E), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N) proteins, as well as four non-structural proteins. Along with the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV), transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), and porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV), PDCoV is one of the five coronaviruses known to cause disease in pigs. Pigs with PDCoV diarrhea exhibit symptoms such as acute diarrhea, often accompanied by acute vomiting, dehydration, weight loss, emaciation, and death, which closely resemble the clinical signs of diarrhea caused by PEDV and TGEV.
