Escherichia coli<\/em> are gram-negative bacteria that are commensal microorganisms in the human gut. However, certain strains of E. coli<\/em> can cause intestinal and extraintestinal diseases in humans, such as urinary tract infections (UTI), septicemia, and meningitis. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli<\/em> (STEC) are considered enterohaemorrhagic E. coli<\/em> (EHEC) or verocytotoxin-producing E. coli<\/em> (VTEC). They cause diarrhea as well as more severe diseases in humans, such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The cause of these syndromes is identified as the Shiga toxins (Stx1 and Stx2) produced by the serotype O157:H7 strain.<\/p>\n
