Shigella<\/em><\/a> are Gram-negative, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic bacilli that do not form spores. They are the causative agents of bacillary dysentery (with 25% of cases showing clear dysentery symptoms, 25% being asymptomatic, and the majority presenting with mild diarrhea, with a few chronic cases). In Vietnam, the most common Shigella<\/em> pathogens are S. flexneri<\/em> (61.5%) and S. sonnei <\/em>(38.5%). Shigella<\/em> outbreaks typically occur in densely populated areas with poor sanitation. Bacillary dysentery is very common in children, though adults can also contract the disease, usually with less severity. Shigella<\/em> invades the mucosa of the colon, causing mucus secretion, congestion, leukocyte infiltration, edema, and often superficial mucosal ulceration. Shigella dysenteriae<\/em> type 1 produces Shiga toxin, which causes diarrhea and sometimes hemolytic - uremic syndrome.<\/p>\n
